Robert Vogel's RCFW Hellcat Warbird Racer

Robert's Hellcat was built and modified to participate in the popular SWRA and RCPRO warbird racing classes. As such many of the scale details were left off and the airframe is finished with Monokote in order to keep it light and simple. The wing spars and fuselage longerons were upgraded to hard wood in order to bear the flight loads and Robert changed the shape of the tail feathers slightly to suit his own personal tastes. Power comes from a "massaged" YS 1.40 four stroke which is set up to run up to 70% nitro in race trim. All up weight is in the neighborhood of 10.25 lbs. The finish duplicates that of a restored Hellcat as it appeared in the late 1960's when operated by the late J.R. Sandberg. Sandberg later went on to build and operate the well known homebuilt Reno racer "Tsunami".

F6F-5 Hellcat by Tighe O'Meara

Tighe added many scale details to his Hellcat including flaps, a full cockpit with a sliding hood, scale tailwheel, and thousands upon thousands of rivets as well as other surface detail. Finished with fiberglass and epoxy resin and then painted with automotive paint in the markings of a USS Santee based Hellcat. Power comes from a RCGF 20cc gas burner which fits nicely within the cowl and should provide plenty of power.
